Arc-en-Ciel - a successful premiere at TNL!

The rainbow is first and foremost a physical phenomenon. But it is also a powerful symbol - of diversity, peace and justice. And a true source of inspiration for artists.

Arc-en-ciel is the name of a full-length cycle I composed over time. It has its origins in the seven colours of the rainbow. The instrumental formation is the same as that in Schönberg's Pierrot lunaire. It is divided into different sections for the individual movements; only in the final eighth movement do all five required instruments play together. The poetic content of Schönberg's scoring model is also taken up: Although no direct language is used, the performance was given a theatrical component by dancer Jill Crovisier and the lighting design. Light and dance form a kind of counterpoint to the music, but also to each other.

Arc-en-Ciel premiered at Théâtre National Luxembourg on June 12, 13 & 14.

6 Lieder vom kalten Berg

Für Kinder- oder Frauenchor mit Klavierbegleitung - Texte: Han Shan (7. bis 8. Jahrhundert, China)

Die historische Person des Hanshan ist kaum greifbar. Als einzige Quelle für seine Biografie dient die Gedichtsammlung Hanshan shi (deutsch: Gedichte vom Kalten Berg). Diese besteht aus etwa 360 Gedichten, wovon 307 Han-Shan zugeschrieben werden, und einem kurzen, jedoch wenig zuverlässigen Vorwort. Der Name Hanshan ist ein Pseudonym, der Dichter wurde, wie auch viele chinesische Zen-Meister, nach dem Berg benannt, auf dem er lebte, in diesem Fall einem Berg im Tiantai-Gebirge im Südosten Chinas, wohin der Dichter sich "aus dem Staub der Welt" zurückzog und wo er in einer Höhle gelebt haben soll. Wahrscheinlich lebte er Ende des 7. Jahrhunderts oder im 8. Jahrhundert, manchmal wird auch das 9. Jh. Angenommen.

6 Songs from the Cold Mountain

The historical person of Hanshan is hardly tangible. The only source for his biography is the collection of poems Hanshan shi (English: Poems of the Cold Mountain). This consists of about 360 poems, 307 of which are attributed to Han-Shan, and a short but not very reliable preface. The name Hanshan is a pseudonym; the poet, like many Chinese Zen masters, was named after the mountain on which he lived, in this case a mountain in the Tiantai Mountains in southeast China, where the poet withdrew "from the dust of the world" and where he is said to have lived in a cave. He probably lived at the end of the 7th century or in the 8th century, some place him in the 9th century.

 

Three premieres in one month!

This month of November 2022 is quite a special one as three of my compositions are being performed for the first time.

Treibsand for Alto and Sax-Alt

On Friday, November 11th, United Instruments of Lucilin presented Minimum 2/Maximum 3, a sample of their new repertoire, including my composition “Treibsand” at the November Music Festival in Den Bosch (NL).

Seen superficially, “Treibsand”, meaning “quicksand”, appears in nature as a solid, load-bearing surface, which, however, can very quickly take on unimagined other forms. I wanted to achieve something similar in my music. By "letting go" while composing, I tried to explore and use new spaces and possibilities. Nevertheless, the overall impression of great formal unity should always be given.

Very busy for Saxophon Alto and Piano

"Very busy" was created in the summer of 2016 in Austria (Vorarlberg). Light-hearted and with slight references to jazzy music, the composition experiments between the familiar and new techniques such as multiphonics, quarter tones, etc. The title also says it all. The title is also the programme, as both musicians communicate their respective moods with the text "very busy" while making music.

This piece premiered on November 13th in Hellange, where I hosted a private concert by the gifted Cologne (D) based “Duo Gegenwind”.

Obsessions – Voice and Percussion

And finally, November 25th will mark the premiere of my piece “Obsessions”, which will be performed by the Eunoia Quintett in Basel.

It was the sound poem KARAWANE (Train of Elephants) by Hugo Ball (1917), which inspired me to write this piece. Hugo Ball recited this semantically meaningless nonsense poem, along with other onomatopoeic works, for the first time in June 1916 at the Dadaist events in the café, cabaret and artists' meeting place "Cabaret Voltaire", which he founded in the same year in Zurich's Spiegelgasse.

Begegnungen... encounters

The aim of “Begegnungen” (encounters) is to shake up things in today’s environment, which is often hostile to encounters, and to the very idea of culture… despite or maybe precisely because of the ubiquitous nature of social media and of the worldwide web, which pulls us into an ever ending connectivity but often at the cost of a real dialogue.

I hope you’ll enjoy the videographic testimony of this co-production by Théâtre National du Luxembourg, Animato asbl, United Instruments of Lucilin and Contemporary Music Luxembourg, which brought together the East and the West, while combining music, dance, paintwork and theater.

Premiere of "Music for three"

In 2019, the Ensemble A-Trio (electric violin, alto saxophone and piano) had commission a piece, which could not be performed as planned in 2020 due to the pandemic. On Sunday, June 20th at 6 p.m. my composition “Music for three” was finally performed live by the Ensemble live during an online concert.

Les musiciens de l'Ensemble A-Trio (violon électrique, saxophone alto et piano) m'ont commandé une composition en 2019, qui n'a pu être jouée comme prévu en 2020 en raison de la pandémie. Ma pièce a enfin pu être jouée le dimanche 20 juin à 18h dans le cadre d’un concert en ligne.

Premiere of "Arc-en-Ciel, Indigo"

I am excited to announce that my composition "Arc-en-Ciel, Indigo" for alto flute and piano will premiere on June 4th at Philharmonie Luxembourg, as part of the concert "Bridges 2 / The Piano Blue - radio opera". The programme put together by flutist Maria Miteva includes pieces by Luxembourgish, Austrian and Bulgarian composers.

On this occasion Maria Miteva will release her CD "Ways", which includes “Arc-en-Ciel, Indigo”. This composition is part of my “Arc-en-Ciel” series for different chamber music formations, inspired by the colors of the rainbow.

Maria Miteva will also be performing this programme on June 22nd, at the „Sofia Music Weeks, Bulgaria“.

Echoes of Autumn and Light

Le nouveau CD de Kammerata, Echoes of Autumn and Light, est maintentant disponbile… et je suis particulièrement heureux d’avoir pu y contribuer avec ma composition “Lieder des Herbstes”.

Ce CD représente en quelque sorte un document regroupant cinq oeuvres de quatre compositeurs ayant un fort encrage avec le Grand-Duché. Les thèmes de la lumière et de l’automne sont au coeur de ces compositions. N’hésitez pas à le découvrir ici.

Nouvel épisode de la série arc-en-ciel

Le tout dernier morceau que je viens de composer dans ma série arc-en-ciel s’intitule “INDIGO”.

A l’instar des autres pièces de cette série, qui s’inspire de la théorie des couleurs de Newton, il s’agit d’une composition pour deux instruments, en l’occurrence flûte alto et piano.

L'indigo est souvent qualifié de « septième couleur » de l'arc-en-ciel depuis Isaac Newton. Celui-ci distingua, dans le dégradé continu des couleurs de la lumière blanche décomposée par le prisme, sept couleurs : rouge (ruber), doré (aureus), jaune (flavus), vert (viridis), ciel (cæruleus), indigo (indicus) et violet (violaceus).

Cette répartition a été peu comprise par ses successeurs.

« Malgré toute notre bonne volonté, nous n'avons pu comprendre l'individualité que la physique attribue à la septième couleur, l'indigo.

Quelle est l'action particulière de cette septième couleur ? Quelle en est la complémentaire, l'inverse ?

Pour nous, l'indigo n'est qu'une des nombreuses nuances du bleu, comme l'azur, le cobalt, l'outremer, le bleu minéral, etc., etc. »

Quant à ma transposition musicale de la théorie de Newton, elle est évidemment complètement hypothétique et subjective… mais elle m’apporte beaucoup de joie!

La représentation de mon morceau « Deai » pour Shakuhachi (flûte japonaise en bambou), tambours Taiko, piano et orchestre à cordes était prévue pour ce mois de novembre. L’orchestre et les trois solistes japonais étaient prêts… mais Covid a changé la donne. Pas de nouvelle date en vue, malheureusement.

Music for Three

J’ai composé ce morceau de 16 minutes pour violon électrique, saxophone alto et piano sur commande de l’ensemble A-Trio. Certains parmi vous se rappelleront peut-être que ce sympathique et talentueux trio, originaire de Cologne, s’était produit chez moi à Hellange, début juin 2019. Reste à espérer que “Music for Three” puisse bientôt être interprété dans le cadre d’un concert en direct.

Dear friends, this week I am off to Basel to rehearse my composition “Obsessions” with percussionist Louisa Marxen. “Obsessions” is a scenic piece for 1 percussionist, inspired by “Karawane” , a poem by Hugo Ball, originally performed in the Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich in 1916. The printed version was later published in the Dada Almanach, as Ball´s performance can be seen as one of the key moments in the development of Dadaism. The artist comes from a literature and theater background and reinvented language without meaning or grammar, also known as “Lautsprache”.

Chers amis, cette semaine je pars à Bâle pour répéter ma composition “Obsessions” avec la percussionniste Louisa Marxen.  La pianiste Martine Schaack, la percussioniste Netty Glesener, le tromboniste Marc Meyers et l’ensemble instrumental “Luxembourg Brass” vont présenter lors de ce concert ACTART des oeuvres de Johny Fritz, Camille Kerger et Claude Lenners, tous éminents compositeurs de musique contemporaine Luxembourgeoise.
